In the Liberal Arts Undergraduate Council, the student government of Penn State's College of the Liberal Arts, I am an officer due to my status as the Student Senator for the Liberal Arts to the University Faculty Senate. In this role, I also help encourage our general members to get more involved in College activities by training them for my old positions and appointing them to new ones.
In addition to my duties as Senator, I also run the LAUC website and Twitter account as further extensions of the College's (and my own) commitment to emergent digital technologies.
Finally, I am the Public Relations chairperson for Liberal Arts Envoys (website under construction), the student "face" of the College of the Liberal Arts. As such, I also run the Liberal Arts Envoys Twitter account.
Because I believe that I should take an active role in my education, I have become intensely involved in the activity of my College, Penn State's College of the Liberal Arts.
First and foremost, I am the Student Senator for the Liberal Arts in the University Faculty Senate. In that body, I uphold the interests of Liberal Arts students and sit on the Libraries, Information Systems, and Technology (LIST) Committee.
Secondly, I sit on the Faculty Advisory Board for Technology and Pedagogy, in which I have the fascinating opportunity to engage in discussions with faculty and administration about the use of technology in the classroom. One of my comments in this board spurred the creation of a technology assistantship program in the College, and the website I created can be found here.
In addition to serving in student government in my own College, I also serve in Penn State's central student government, the University Park Undergraduate Association. I sit on the Executive Board of this assembly as the Secretary and Director of Records. My work in this role has seen the standardization of the minutes-taking system and a commitment to transparency that results in the immediate and accessible posting of minutes on the organization's website.
Furthermore, I serve as the Liberal Arts Delegate to the Academic Affairs Committee. I am also the Undergraduate Education Subcommittee Chair; my goal this semester is to raise a stink about inflated textbook prices and determine, by the end of the Fall 2012 semester, a substantive, sustainable route to decreasing students' textbook burdens.
When I was a sophomore, I was selected to join an elite group of Penn State students called The Presidential Leadership Academy. As a member of this Academy, I took a class with former Penn State President Graham Spanier (giving me a multifaceted perspective on the recent scandal, among other things) and Dean Christian Brady of the Schreyer Honors College. The discussions from these classes, as well as seminar-based trips to Washington, D.C. and San Francisco, have given me much insight as to how to improve my leadership practices in other organizations.
